Child-Safe Shower Drain Cover

Child-Safe Shower Drain Cover

There are numerous shower drain cover designs available. However, a traumatic experience involving my young daughter prompted me to create a safer alternative. She had managed to get her finger stuck in a steel drain cover (as seen in the first photo), which even the fire department struggled to free due to its hardness and a stubborn burr that made it impossible to release with ice or lubrication. Ultimately, she required emergency surgery to have her finger cut free. Years ago, I didn't have access to a 3D printer, so I improvised by creating a makeshift plastic part that roughly fit the drain. Nevertheless, while working on other shower components, I realized it was time to design and print a safer drain cover. This model is more secure due to its smaller holes and its construction from PLA plastic, which can be easily cut away with wire cutters. Interestingly, our home's showers feature different drain mounts; one style uses screws, while the other employs spring-loaded clips. The design I created (depicted on the left in the second and third photos) is versatile and can be installed on either type of drain without any adjustments.
