The complex of S. Maria in Colleromano is situated not far from the center of Penne (PE). Built in 1197 by Benedictines of the Cistercian order, in 1505 the monastery was handed over to Franciscans of Penne who initiated restoration work. In the second half of the Seventeenth century, a new phase of work began with which it is cut decisively on the original configuration. The works were completed in 1792 with the last commission, entrusted to architect G.A. Fontana, concerning the modernization of the facade. During the restoration carried out by the Civil Engineering in 1960-61, in order to "recover" the medieval aspect of the church, Fontana's facade was demolished and replaced by a simple and anonymous brick curtain. During the same disputed restoration, necessary as a result of the damage caused by World War II, the roofs were rebuilt and two ramp arches were added; finally, the front of the convent was pushed back that partly concealed the facade of the church.
