The Church of the Assumption of Mary boasts 669 intricate images. History The Church of Santa Maria Assunta emerged in 1150 on the site of an ancient monastery, possibly dedicated to Saint Mary in Selice, at the behest of Bishop Berardo of Forcona, as attested by a parchment discovered late in the 18th century during the demolition of the altar dedicated to St. Giles. The crypt of the current church represents remnants of the original church dedicated to San Franco. The church in late Romanesque style has a complex history consisting of various architectural interventions, including transformations in Baroque style in the 18th century and a disputed restoration to restore the church to its Romanesque forms in the 1960s.
