In 1718, Nonhelema Hokolesqua was born into the Chalakatha division of the Shawnee nation. Raised in Pennsylvania, she spent her early years surrounded by the rolling hills and verdant forests that would shape her future. Her family, led by her father Okowellos, traveled to Alabama's untamed wilderness in 1725 with her brother Cornstalk and their metis mother Katee in tow. They returned to Pennsylvania just five short years later. By 1734, Nonhelema had married her first husband, a Chalakatha chief who would provide for her family's needs. As the years passed, she rose through the ranks of Shawnee society, becoming a respected leader by 1750. Her sister Cornstalk stood by her side as they migrated to Ohio and established thriving neighboring villages. Standing an impressive six feet, six inches tall, Nonhelema was known for her fearlessness in battle and earned the nickname "The Grenadier" or "The Grenadier Squaw." Her stature and courage inspired awe in those who knew her. Throughout her life, she would marry three times, each union bringing its own unique experiences and challenges to her remarkable journey.
