Chichen Itza was a prominent Mayan city in the Yucatan Peninsula that flourished for over 1,000 years. Various cultures left their mark on this significant site, including the Maya and Toltec civilizations. Numerous buildings still stand today, showcasing their artistic works and stone monuments. Situated in the northern region of the Yucatan peninsula, Chichen Itza was once a powerful city that attracted millions of visitors before the Spanish conquests in the 16th century. The Maya civilization originated around 3,000 years ago in Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, and Mexico, and their empire thrived until around 900 AD. Despite the collapse of the southern region, the northern Yucatan continued to prosper. The Maya were skilled farmers and developed a sophisticated written language, social class system, and trade networks. They also excelled in mathematics and astronomy, using their knowledge to create an advanced calendar and commemorate celestial events with monuments.
