Chichen Itza stands as a colossal pre-Columbian archaeological site constructed by the Maya civilization in the northern heart of the Yucatan Peninsula, situated within the Municipality of Tinum, Yucatan state, present-day Mexico. As a pivotal point in the northern Maya lowlands, Chichen Itza played a major role from the Late Classic through the Terminal Classic and into the early part of the Early Postclassic period. The site showcases an array of architectural styles, ranging from what is known as "In the Mexican Origin" to styles reminiscent of central Mexico and the Puuc style characteristic of the Puuc Maya in the northern lowlands. Initially, the presence of central Mexican styles was believed to be indicative of direct migration or even conquest from central Mexico, but most contemporary interpretations view this phenomenon more as a result of cultural diffusion.
