Quick Facts Construction begins: 1922 Construction ends: 1923 Designed by Holabird & Roche Type: Holy Place of Worship Stories: 29 levels high Maximum Height: 568 feet / 173 meters tall Statistics Seating capacity for 1,000 people Timeline 1834: A log cabin was built just north of the Chicago River for this congregation. 1837: The cabin was moved to the corner of Clark and Washington Streets, where it still stands today. 1845: A new brick building replaced the old log cabin. 1858: A four-story building was constructed to replace the earlier brick structure. The church occupies the upper two floors. 1871: The building suffered damage from the Great Chicago Fire but was quickly rebuilt. 1922: Construction on this building began. 1924: This building was officially dedicated. 1952: The sky chapel was dedicated. Notes At completion, this building held the title of tallest in Chicago. This structure is faced with grey and white Bedford oolitic limestone from Indiana mines. The stained glass windows were created by Giannini & Hilgart Studios artists. Alois Lang carved the main altar in the first floor sanctuary. It depicts Jesus weeping over Jerusalem as he descends from the Mount of Olives. The sky chapel's altar features Jesus looking out over Chicago's skyline. The structural beams of the sky chapel are shaped like Saint Andrew's crosses. This building boasts an organ with 92 ranks and four manuals.
