The Cubs are an American professional baseball team based on the North Side of Chicago, Illinois. Competing in Major League Baseball as a National League (NL) Central division member, they play their home games at Wrigley Field. The Cubs are one of two active major league teams located in Chicago; the other is the White Sox, a member of the American League (AL) Central division. Currently owned by Thomas S. Ricketts, son of TD Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts, the team played its first games in 1876 as a founding member of the National League (NL). They became officially known as the Chicago Cubs for the 1903 season. The Cubs are tied with the Atlanta Braves for being the oldest active U.S. professional sports club. Both teams began play in 1876, the same year. The franchise set a Major League record with 116 wins in 1906 and holds a modern-era record winning percentage of .763. They appeared in their first World Series that same year but lost to their crosstown rivals, the White Sox. The Cubs won back-to-back World Series titles in 1907 and 1908, becoming the first team to play in three consecutive Fall Classics and the first to win two championships. Since then, they have appeared in seven World Series, with their last appearance being in 1945. The team has not won a championship in 107 years, making them the longest drought of any major North American professional sports team. The Cubs are often referred to as "Lovable Losers" due to this record. They also known as "The North Siders" because Wrigley Field is located on the North Side of Chicago's Lake View community at 1060 West Addison Street. The team has a significant rivalry with the St. Louis Cardinals.
