The 1953 Corvette was a stunning beauty, its fiberglass body a bold innovation in sports car design, yet as an actual racing machine it was woefully inadequate. The chassis showed notable improvement with the 'Vette's enhanced weight distribution, but beneath the surface it remained essentially a 1952 Chevy sedan's suspension setup. This meant the front end relied on a rudimentary independent system while the rear struggled to stay aloft on leaf springs. A faster steering gear granted the car some semblance of agility, though speed and quickness are not one and the same. The 150-horsepower, 235-cubic-inch six-cylinder engine paired with the two-speed automatic Powerglide transmission was decidedly lacking in athletic prowess.
