Cheval de Lourdes

Original in mammoth ivory, Saint-Germain-en-Laye museum of national Archaeology. This statuette of horse was unearthed at the end of the 19th century in the cave of Espélugues at Lourdes, Hautes-Pyrénées. It is assigned to the Magdalenian period (approximately -15,000 years). Worked in mammoth ivory, a rare material in Western Europe, this figurine demonstrates exceptional control over sculpture and engraving techniques. The horse is rendered with remarkable realism, both anatomically and in terms of attitude, featuring numerous details. It's worth noting that prehistoric men had extensive knowledge of wild horses, which they hunted on a daily basis.
