Chess Set with box
thingiverse
This is a compact chess set with a portable carrying case designed for easy transportation. The game pieces and board are magnetically secured, ensuring that they stay in place during play. The compact 180mm x 180mm game board can be easily scaled up as needed (the full box measures 200mm x 200mm). I aimed to create simplified Staunton-style chess pieces while maintaining their distinctive curves and making them easily recognizable. In hindsight, I might have preferred designing the set without magnets, opting instead for a more secure way of keeping the pieces in place within the box. Another version may follow this approach and incorporate multi-material capable printers. Here are my chosen materials: * eSUN PLA+ filament * 1/2" diameter x 1/16" tall Neodymium Magnets (Warning: these magnets are extremely powerful and can shatter if they collide rapidly) * 16 Gauge thick Steel sheet (approximately 1.6mm, must be treated to prevent rusting unless using stainless steel) * Dowel rod (available in various materials such as steel, stainless, or brass; I ended up printing my own instead) * Paint for the steel board (optional post-processing for pieces and board) * Felt for the bottom of pieces (important for adding space between the sheet metal and magnet, making movement more comfortable while protecting the magnets) ---Update Log: May 13th, 2018--- The Neodymium Magnets I used are incredibly strong, causing the entire board to lift when moving pieces. The pieces also attract to each other, so I made some simple design changes to improve the overall design. Unfortunately, I'm not entirely happy with the final box design as it requires printing with numerous supports unless you have a multi-material printer and wish to insert the steel plate during the print. As a note of caution, avoid encapsulating magnets inside prints as they can pop out and attach to the nozzle or mess up your bed sensor. [Animated Box Hinge](https://i.imgur.com/u5x3roi.gifv) A new box design has been uploaded with pin and hinge assembly instructions below! ---Update Log: May 15th, 2018--- The hinge has been updated to prevent wobble. I decided it wasn't worth the added complexity of a curved design. ---Update Log: May 16th, 2018--- New Photos!! My print is complete, and I've swapped the box model to have an exposed pin (in case you need to remove it later). I've also marked this as a completed project (no longer in progress).
