Chess Set Staunton Modern 1
thingiverse
I was on the hunt for a sleek modern-looking Staunton set that boasted elegant lines. The king's regal stature stood at 4 1/8" (104mm) tall, resting atop a base of 1 7/8" (47mm), so it demands a chessboard with square dimensions of at least 2 1/4" for a flawless display. My trusty board features squares measuring 2 3/8" (60mm). To ensure stable printing, I strategically carved out an area at the base of each piece to accommodate weight addition. Additional specifics on each piece's height follow: King: The mighty king towers above its counterparts at 4 1/8" (104mm). Queen: This elegant piece reaches a stature of 3 5/8" (92mm). Bishop: With an imposing yet subtle presence, the bishop measures 3 1/16" (78mm) in height. Knight: I sought to modernize the classic design but was torn between this look and the traditional representation as a horse. Pawn: The humble pawn stands at a modest 2 1/8" (54mm). In relation to my Knight model, I welcome any input from the community on its sleek new appearance. Note that due to shape resolution issues when incorporating a cutout area in ViaCAD for the Bishop piece, an updated model will soon be made available for viewing and download. Printing Considerations To avoid supports or rafts altogether, I chose to arrange the primary pieces and print them all together. The remaining 8 pawns were then individually printed in subsequent runs. Given my experiences with a Replicator 2, the black material produces virtually flawless results while the white sometimes shows minor imperfections requiring careful filing off after printing. Individual prints are advised for the best quality.
