Chess Set (optionally magnetic)
thingiverse
A chess set designed for 3D printing, created using OpenSCAD's powerful programming language. To add some visual interest, different design styles are used for black and white pieces, making each one unique. The chessboard is composed of 64 square pieces and 8 edge pieces that fit together seamlessly. With precise tolerances, the board will be sturdy enough to lift easily on one corner. Before printing the entire set, it's recommended to test print two squares first. This ensures a snug fit between interlocking parts and confirms magnet placement in cutouts for the variant with magnets. If necessary, fine-tune the fit using OpenSCAD's customizer. The included STL files use values that worked well with 3mm radius, 3mm height neodymium magnets. To ensure even layering, print all board pieces with the top layer aligned across the entire board. This will result in a smooth and flat surface. Components are provided as individual STL files for easy printing and as grouped files for bulk printing: * All black chess pieces * All white chess pieces * 9 horizontal edge pieces * 16 vertical edge pieces The chess_set.stl file is an illustration, not intended for direct printing. However, it can be used to visualize the design. Multiple variants are available: embossed or engraved labels on edge pieces and magnet cutouts in board squares and chess pieces. For print with magnets, pause commands must be added to gcode or multiple pieces printed simultaneously while inserting magnets between prints. A small dab of CA glue on the bottom of each magnet prevents rattling during printing.
