This is a fantastic initial project for 3D modeling with OpenSCAD and/or TinkerCAD. Fifth-grade students in computer class took on the challenge of designing their own unique chess piece. The key constraints were that it had to be printable without support and fit perfectly on a standard chess board. The benefits of this chess piece challenge became immediately apparent as the printed pieces only took 20-40 minutes to complete, on average. Students could quickly witness their designs come to life and were even allowed one reprint if needed. Next, the class voted on their top picks.
