Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on a chessboard, a checkered gameboard with 64 squares arranged in an 8x8 grid. Millions of people worldwide play the game every day. Chess originated in India before the 7th century, where it evolved from the Indian game chaturanga. Chaturanga is also believed to be the ancestor of Eastern strategy games like xiangqi and shogi, as well as janggi. Chess spread to Europe by the 9th century through the Umayyad conquest of Hispania. The chess pieces gained their current powers in Spain during the late 15th century, and the game's rules were standardized in the 19th century.
