Players prepare to face off on a standard 64-square chess board, each side arrayed with their pawns and other pieces ready for battle. The eight pawns stand at attention along the second row from the bottom, six in front of them and one behind. In addition to these foot soldiers, each player has two knights, two bishops, two rooks, a queen, and a king strategically positioned on the board to safeguard their territory and outmaneuver their opponent.
