The Human Genome Project is a groundbreaking research initiative that aims to map every single gene within the human body. Funded by the US Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health, this ambitious project has been underway since 1990 with a projected completion date in 2003. Researchers have made rapid progress in deciphering the approximately three billion base pairs that make up the human genome, but the task is monumental nonetheless.
