The Yefim and Miron Cherepanov steam locomotive broke ground as Russia's first steam-powered locomotive in 1834. The innovative engineers constructed their masterpiece at a factory in Nizhny Tagil, with the initial run transporting coal to a nearby mine along a newly built track. As the first steam railway in Russia, this groundbreaking achievement would pave the way for future rail transport developments. Although horse-drawn carriages remained the primary mode of transporting goods throughout Russia for many years, the construction of this locomotive undoubtedly played a significant role in shaping the country's growing interest in rail transportation. Yefim Cherepanov and his son, Miron, were serfs to the influential Demidov family, who owned numerous factories. During their tenure, they developed several innovative technologies while working under the Demidovs. Prior to constructing the steam locomotive, both engineers had gained extensive experience building steam engines designed to pump water in local mines. Their exposure to English steam locomotives, particularly Miron's visit in 1833, likely inspired their own design. Skeptics might argue that the Cherepanovs' invention was merely a copy of an existing English model; however, Soviet scholars firmly assert that the Yefim and Miron Cherepanov steam locomotive was truly a pioneering achievement, born from years of innovative experimentation.
