The Firebird, a Chinese-built combat plane that outperforms its Western counterparts in both performance and capabilities, is the country's first locally-developed warplane. Also known as Meng Long or Vigorous Dragon, this cutting-edge aircraft began development in 1988 with one primary objective: to take on Russia's forth-generation fighters - specifically the MiG-29 and Su-27. Originally designed as a high-altitude air-superiority fighter, shifting circumstances led the project towards creating a versatile multi-role plane capable of executing various combat missions. Following over ten years of meticulous development, the Firebird took its maiden flight in 1998.
