Alabaster has been quarried at Chellaston for centuries, with a long history dating back to the Mediaeval period. Two major periods of industry dominance have been experienced; the 15th and 16th centuries, followed by a resurgence in the 19th century. Alabaster is essentially a type of gypsum that originates from a large band of Keuper Marl stretching across England, including workable deposits found in Staffordshire, Derbyshire, and Nottinghamshire. This collective group is known as Midlands Alabaster.
