Cheetahs are powerful felines in the subfamily Felinae that inhabit primarily Africa and certain regions of Asia such as Iran. They are the sole surviving members of the genus Acinonyx. Renowned for their incredible speed, cheetahs can reach velocities of up to 109.4 to 120.7 km/h (68.0 to 75.0 mph), surpassing any other land animal's pace. Capable of covering distances of up to 500 m (1,640 ft) in short sprints and accelerating from 0 to 96 km/h (0 to 60 mph) in just three seconds, cheetahs have evolved remarkable physical attributes for speed. Their bodies are characterized by long legs, an elongated spine, specially adapted claws for traction on the ground, and a lengthy tail that aids in balance. Cheetahs boast pale yellow coats with black spots on their upper portions and white bellies. Their facial features are distinguished by prominent, black lines that curve from the inner corner of each eye to the outer corners of the mouth. They are social creatures typically found in groups consisting of either a mother and her offspring, siblings who remain together for approximately six months after leaving their mother's care, or coalitions of males living and hunting together. Adult females generally lead solitary lives, only converging with males for mating purposes.
