Cheese Grater Sampler
grabcad
The cheese-grater sampler, inspired by its namesake, collects rock samples by dragging it across the ground. A robotic arm or rover attachment moves the device forward, collecting rocks up to 2cm in size through a sifter section that separates smaller dust particles. The remaining rocks are measured for mass at a weighing station, and once a threshold is reached, deposit stage begins. The apparatus is tilted towards a collection container, and a motor rotates the container, depositing rocks in overlapping spirals. This design reduces complexity and future improvements will focus on reducing overall mass. Made of aluminium, the apparatus weighs 602g including its motor and pressure sensor, which operate within the device's 30-watt power limit.
