Ancient Rite of Cheek Piercing Rituals in Nayarit In the heart of Ixtlan del Rio, a town nestled in the Mexican state of Nayarit, archaeologists have uncovered a fascinating ancient ritual. This remarkable find dates back to a period spanning from 100 B.C. to A.D. 300. The ritual, which was once performed by the region's inhabitants, involved piercing the cheeks with ceramic and pigment-laden instruments. The resulting artifacts are now on display at the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago, where they have been since their acquisition in 1997 as part of accession number 1997.475.
