I dug into my piggy bank and created a US version of the Charpentier illusion using 14 x 1 cent pieces and 24 x 2 cent coins. A couple of years after posting this, I was heading to my office when I happened to be carrying two empty laptop boxes and one full one, and wondered how well this would work on a larger scale. The result was AMAZING! So well that I had everyone in the office give it a try and it was hilarious to see their puzzled expressions.
