Charon serves as Hades' ferryman, transporting the newly deceased souls across Styx and Acheron rivers that separate the living from the dead. A coin payment for Charon's passage is often placed in or on a deceased person's mouth, typically an obolus or danake. Some sources claim those unable to pay the fee or left unburied must wander shorelines for one hundred years. In the catabasis myth, heroes such as Heracles, Orpheus, Aeneas, Theseus, Sisyphus, Dionysus, Odysseus, and Psyche travel to the underworld and return alive with Charon's boat assistance.
