Charmander is known in Japan as Hitokage, making it one of Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon species. Created by Ken Sugimori, this Pokémon first appeared in the video games Pokémon Red and Blue, and its sequels, later showing up in various merchandise, spinoff titles, animated adaptations, and printed works based on the franchise. The end of a Charmander's tail is ablaze with fire, and the size of that flame reflects both the physical health and emotions of the individual. Charmander was created as one of the first Pokémon and is a starter Pokémon players can choose from at the start of Pokémon Red and Blue, and their remakes, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. In the anime series, Ash acquires a Charmander early on and it becomes one of his most used Pokémon. In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Blue receives a Charmander from Professor Oak. Since its appearance in the Pokémon series, Charmander has received generally positive reception. Charmander first appeared in episode 11 of Pokémon Indigo League ("The Stray Pokémon – Hitokage"). In that episode, Charmander is left by its owner, Damian, and is rescued by Ash and Brock. When the owner sees how powerful Charmander is, he calls it back. However, due to Damian's abuse, Charmander chooses to follow the group that saved its life and becomes Ash's Pokémon. In the series, the narrator states that if a Charmander's tail flame goes out, it dies. Charmander evolves into Charmeleon, which then evolves into Charizard. Originally, Charizard was Charmander's last form, but since the release of Pokémon X and Y, Charizard can mega evolve into Mega Charizard for the duration of a battle.
