Godecharle Gilles-Lambert, a renowned sculptor from Belgium, lived from 1750 to 1835. He studied under the guidance of Laurent Delvaux, who was known as the only internationally recognized sculptor in his retinue. Godecharle's exceptional talent earned him a prestigious grant from Empress Maria Theresa, allowing him to travel and pursue his studies in Paris and Rome. His notable works include official commissions from Napoleon and William I of the Netherlands. The pediment sculptures he created for the Chamber of Representatives and Senate of the Austrian Netherlands are still prominent today, although most of his output consisted of portrait busts. In fact, his son, Napoleon Godecharle, left a significant portion of their family's wealth to the City of Brussels to establish the Prix Godecharle, an award recognizing outstanding artists in painting, sculpture, and architecture.
