Design a Cutting Layout for the Laser Cutter. Open up your preferred computer-aided design (CAD) software and create a new project. Choose the correct units of measurement for your laser cutter, which is usually inches or millimeters. Draw a rectangle that represents the workpiece. Add dimensions to the rectangle so you can see its size in real-time. The width and length of this rectangle should match the actual dimensions of your workpiece. To create cut lines on the workpiece, draw a line along the top edge of the rectangle, extending it slightly beyond both ends. This represents the cutting line for the laser cutter's first pass. Draw additional lines below the first line, spaced evenly apart to represent the cutting passes needed to complete the job. The number and spacing of these lines will depend on the thickness of your workpiece and the desired finish. Draw a similar set of lines along the bottom edge of the rectangle for the second cutting pass. Make sure these lines are positioned so that they intersect with the first set of lines at their ends, creating clean cuts through the entire width of the workpiece. Repeat this process for any additional cutting passes needed to complete your project.
