Parkour (French: [paˈkʊʁ]) originated as a training discipline, emerging from military obstacle course techniques. Those who practice parkour strive to traverse complex environments efficiently, using movement without aids, to reach one destination swiftly from another. They execute an array of skills including running, freerunning, climbing, swinging, vaulting, jumping, plyometrics, rolling and crawling on all fours to navigate obstacles optimally. This physical activity can be performed independently or with others in urban settings though it is equally possible to practice it anywhere. Parkour encourages individuals to perceive their surroundings from a unique perspective, discovering opportunities for navigating environments through various movements around, across, under, over and through obstacles. Developed in France primarily by Raymond Belle's innovative approaches followed by his son David and a close circle of friends collectively known as Yamakasi during the late 1980s. It wasn't until later decades however, through film documentaries video games, advertisements showcasing their parkour skills that this practice became mainstream especially throughout the 1990s to early 2000s, all of which was made possible due in part by the self-taught skills developed within this French movement discipline called Parkour.
