The Chapman Chain Engine of 1813 pulled itself forward by means of a chain wrapped over a toothed wheel. Its boiler boasted a return U-tube firebox reminiscent of those used on Puffing Billys. This pioneering engine was not only a side-lever type but also the first in the world to incorporate a bogie into its design.
