Singapore Changi Airport is a major aviation hub in Asia and the main airport in Singapore. Located on a 13 square kilometer site in Changi, it's about 17.2 kilometers north-east from the city center. The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore operates the airport and it's home base for several airlines including Singapore Airlines, SilkAir, and Jetstar Asia Airways. Over two million passengers are handled annually by Qantas on its Kangaroo Route between Australia and Europe, making it the largest foreign airline to operate from the airport. As of April 2008, there are about 4,340 weekly flights operated by 80 airlines to over 116 cities in 59 countries. The airport accounts for 13,000 jobs and generates over $4.5 billion in output. Textures and color maps are provided, along with psd files of the textures included. Growth in aviation transport was felt in Singapore where the existing airport at Paya Lebar was facing congestion problems. Opened in 1955 with a single runway and small passenger terminal, it couldn't keep up with rising traffic by the 1970s when passenger numbers rose dramatically from 300,000 to 1,700,000 annually in 1970 and 4,000,000 annually in 1975. The government had two options: expand the existing airport or build a new one at another location. After extensive study, a decision was made in 1972 to keep the airport at Paya Lebar but plans were reviewed again due to the 1973 oil crisis. Concerned that the existing airport would be physically limited by urban growth, the government decided to build a new airport at Changi in 1975. The airport still had to be expanded during this period as traffic increased and airplanes could fly over the sea avoiding noise pollution issues within residential areas. The Paya Lebar airport was subsequently converted for military use. $49.00, August 06, 2015, Last updated: August 06, 2015, Product id: 55c3592eccff75b0688b45e3
