Direct communication with Earth is impossible on the far side of the Moon because transmissions are blocked by it. To communicate, messages must travel through a communications relay satellite that has a clear view of both the landing site and Earth. On 20 May 2018, CNSA successfully launched the Queqiao relay satellite into a halo orbit around the L2 point where the Earth's gravity and Moon's gravity are balanced.
