Chamaeleonidae is a family of lizards, commonly called chameleons, found primarily in Africa and Madagascar but also in the Middle East, southern Europe, and Asia. Chameleons have the ability to change their skin color and their eyes can move independently, giving them a unique appearance. They are well-known for their long, extendable tongues used to catch insects, and their sticky, prehensile tails that help them grip onto branches. Chameleons are primarily arboreal animals and spend most of their time in trees. They come in various sizes, from small, about the size of a human thumb, to large, up to 2 feet long. Many chameleon species are threatened by habitat loss and illegal trafficking for the pet trade.
