The Challenger 2 is the main battle tank currently serving with the armies of the United Kingdom and Oman. Vickers Defence Systems built it. The manufacturer claims it's the world's most reliable MBT, but desert operations have revealed problems that needed fixing. Challenger 2 is a complete redesign from its predecessor, Challenger 1. It uses the basic hull and engine parts from the previous tank, but everything else is new. Less than 5% of components are interchangeable. The British Army has replaced Challenger 1 with Challenger 2, and Oman also uses it. The UK ordered 127 tanks in 1991 and another 259 in 1994. Oman bought 18 tanks in 1993 and 20 more in November 1997. Challenger 2 entered service with the British Army in 1998, with the last delivery completed in 2002. It's expected to stay in service until 2035. Deliveries for Oman finished in 2001. Challenger 2 has seen action in Bosnia, Kosovo, and Iraq (2003-present).
