The Challenger 2 main battle tank serves as the primary armored vehicle of the United Kingdom and Oman's military forces. Vickers Defence Systems, a British company, built this highly advanced tank. The manufacturer boasts that it is the world's most reliable MBT, but desert conditions have revealed some issues that needed to be addressed. The Challenger 2 represents a comprehensive redesign from its predecessor, the Challenger 1. Although it retains the basic hull and automotive components of its ancestor, nearly all other parts are entirely new. Less than 5% of components can be exchanged with those used in the earlier model. In 1991, the UK ordered 127 tanks, followed by an additional 259 units in 1994. Oman purchased 18 tanks in 1993 and another 20 in November 1997. The Challenger 2 began serving with the British Army in 1998, with deliveries concluding in 2002. It is projected to remain in service until 2035. Deliveries for Oman were completed in 2001. Operational deployments have taken place in Bosnia, Kosovo, and Iraq since 2003.
