Human: In this project students will create "chalk holders" using 3d modeling software as groups. After completion, each student will present their design to the class and the class will vote for the most popular design that will be printed and used in the classroom. This chalk holder was designed by me using Creo parametric software. First, I sketched a rough idea of my design on paper. Then, I created it on Creo parametric using material subtraction technique. When designing your chalk holders, think about how big you want them to be and how they will attach to the wall or sit on the desk. Project: Chalk holder contest Students should learn basic shapes creation and manipulation in 3d modeling software to create a "chalk holder." They also need to learn how to create their designs using 3d modeling software. Audience: For grade 6-8 range, no prior skills needed but ability to operate computer or communicate ideas to someone else who operates the computer if they are unable. Preparation: * Students will have access to computers with 3d modeling software like Creo Parametric and Autocad. * No previous 3d design experience is required for students. * A teacher familiar with the used software should be available to provide help when needed. * This activity will be done in groups. Steps: 1) Students start brainstorming as a group to think of their chalk holder designs. 2) Rough sketches should be made to smooth out details. 3) Once the sketch is approved by the teacher, create it using 3d modeling software. 4) If necessary, adjust the design on the computer because sometimes it will not work for some reason. 5) Students present their design to the class and try to sell it as if it were a sales pitch. 6) Class votes on which design is the best and that one will be printed and used in the classroom. 7) The chosen design will then be printed and tested by the students once completed printing, the item will be tested in the class. By the end of this activity, students should have better understanding of 3d printing and what it can do. They also should be able to create basic designs on 3d modeling software.
