Update: I learned that proper chainmail construction requires each riveted ring to hold four non-riveted simple circular rings. These circular rings are significantly stronger since they don't have a rivet, making it logical to place solid rings into the opened riveted ring instead of using 100% riveted rings. The result is a much stronger and more practical chainmail design. Designed to replicate European-style riveted chain-mail, this design aims to educate people about the rivet chain-mail making process. With this ring, you can easily achieve the common 4:1 ring ratio (one ring fits four rings). Made similar in scale to real mail but slightly thicker for added rigidity and practicality, I'm eager to see what a set of fifty or more rings would look like. Furthermore, I wonder if the rings are too thick to form neatly on the surface it sits on. This plastic chainmail ring is undoubtedly the strongest online due to its thickness. Print Time: 8 minutes per Chain-mail Ring Dimensions: * Thickness: 3.0 mm (Z layer height) * Inner Diameter (ID) to Outer Diameter (OD): 2.4 mm * Outer Diameter (OD): 15.8 mm * Inner Diameter (ID): 11.0 mm * Rivet Hole: 1.85 mm, designed to fit 1.75 mm PLA filament Making the Rivet: * Simply snip-cut a 5mm length of PLA spool and slide it through the rivet-hole. * Use a solder iron or hot glue gun's heat surface to heat-press form the rivet on both sides. Each mail is exceptionally strong, resistant to plastic deformation, particularly bending and shearing. The weak point lies in the rivet section, which is why it's designed as such, just like real mail. If you wish to modify or remix this design, use the Solidworks part file. I'll upload a STEP format later for those who want to make adjustments, such as reducing the 3mm thickness to improve surface fit or making other tweaks.
