Liquid penetrant inspection (LPI) is a popular and affordable method for discovering surface-breaking flaws in non-porous metals. The process involves attaching a circular reservoir containing liquid penetrant to a chain run, allowing the chain to enter and exit while soaking up the liquid. Afterward, inspectors use either ultraviolet or white light, depending on the type of dye used (fluorescent or non-fluorescent), to detect fatigue cracks or surface defects.
