A chain is an arrangement of linked components, referred to as links, typically made of metal, with an overall resemblance similar to that of a rope in flexibility and curved shape under compression, yet linear, rigid, and load-bearing when in tension. Chains can be constructed from two or more interlocking links. Those designed for lifting duties or use with a hoist are categorized by their torus-shaped links which enable flexibility in multiple dimensions - a fixed dimension being the chain's length itself - while serving decorative purposes as small chains for jewellery represent analogous designs of this type. For transferring power within machines, links mesh seamlessly with machine sprockets to facilitate operation. As a result, they exhibit flexibility in only one direction; these are known as roller chains though block chain types also exist and operate outside the category. Two individual chains can be combined through various connecting methods, including quick link attachments, carabiner, or clevis hinges.
