The Cessna O-1E/L-19 Bird Dog, initially built for observation and liaison purposes by the US Army, experienced widespread use during the Vietnam War. Upon retirement, many aircraft were transferred to the Civil Air Patrol for search and rescue operations. However, due to several accidents involving these planes, they were sold to private owners.
