Česká zbrojovka Strakonice was founded in 1919 as Jihočeská zbrojovka. The company produced firearms, mainly for the military, including pistols, rifles, and machine guns. In 1922, the firm became a joint-stock company, changing its name to Česká zbrojovka v Praze. From 1929 on, the factory began producing bicycles, followed by the development of a bicycle with an auxiliary motor. In 1930, the company registered the ČZ trademark and then produced the first ČZ 76 motorcycle, also known as the Kaktus. During the interwar period, a variety of successful types of motorcycles were manufactured in different engine displacement classes.
