This mutated monster has many maws and tentacles, and its eyes shine with malevolent intelligence that is perhaps the most frightening characteristics of this ruler of the Lightless Deep. Krakens are large enough to grapple and submerge entire ships but they rarely come up to surface, preferring to rule the darkness beneath the waves from their enormous lairs usually located in undersea caves or extinct underwater volcanoes. They frequently conquer entire underwater civilizations of mermen of Sharkfolk who worship them as gods and appease them with sacrifices and food, so that elder krakens rarely stir from their temples and lairs.
