Ceramic ladles are rarely discovered at late period sites throughout the Central Mississippi Valley. This particular example is tempered with coarse shell fragments. The Hampson Museum Collection showcases one of the world's most remarkable collections of American Indian artistic expression, as well as a significant source of data on the lives and history of late pre-Columbian peoples in the Mississippi River Valley. The museum's extensive collections were developed through thorough excavations at the Nodena Site, along with other regional sites conducted by Dr. James K. Hampson and several others, including the University of Alabama and the University of Arkansas. The Virtual Hampson Museum was completed by CAST in 2010. This digital museum is a pioneering effort to make high-resolution data accessible online, marking a significant milestone highlighted in a UA Research Frontiers article published in April 2010.
