Mahatma Gandhi, a renowned Indian lawyer, politician, social activist, and writer, was born October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, India. He led the nationalist movement against British rule of India with remarkable determination and resilience. In his fight for freedom, Gandhi organized Indians to resist the British-imposed salt tax during a monumental march known as the Dandi Salt March in 1930. This remarkable journey stretched approximately 250 miles and earned him widespread recognition. In the year 1942, he called on the British to relinquish their grip on India with a resolute "Quit India" slogan. Throughout his career, Gandhi faced prolonged imprisonments numerous times both in South Africa and India due to his relentless opposition. Gandhi's way of life was modest yet rich with tradition and community spirit. He lived a self-sufficient lifestyle in a co-operative residential setup where the people shared resources for a common cause. A simple Indian dhoti and shawl made from hand-spun yarn, obtained through spinning on a traditional charkha, became his distinct signature attire. His diet was straightforward; it consisted only of plant-based food sources, making him appear strong yet calm at the same time. One notable feature about Gandhi's character is that he regularly engaged in lengthy fasts for purposes ranging from self-cleansing to displaying powerful dissent against injustices.
