Cephalopod - Orthoceras

Orthoceras was an ancient mollusk that thrived over 400 million years ago. The name "straight horn" accurately describes the characteristic long, straight conical shell it possessed. All that remains of this squid ancestor are its preserved shells. Its soft body resided within the last open-ended segment at the large end of the conical shell. As the body grew and the housing segment became too small, a dividing wall called septa formed to separate the old "home chamber" from the new one. The differences in composition between these shell parts allowed for variations in fossilization, making them visible. Two specimens of the Silurian cephalopod Orthoceras ludense were discovered in the Ludlow area. A Canon 5DS R camera and Stackshot 3x with turntable captured 150 images, which were then processed using Agisoft Photoscan at high levels. This object was scanned by Fossils in Shropshire.
