Centurion
grabcad
This is an initial design of a 3D printable sextant, featuring a planetary gearset that displays tenths and hundredths of a degree (requires improvement). It has major and minor markings for 10-degree and 1-degree intervals respectively, with 0 and 90-degree angles indicated. The different perspectives show the optics functioning at elevations of 0, 30, 60, and 90 degrees from horizontal, using a calibration tool. Practically, it involves aligning a horizon through the view, while adjusting mirrors and a slider for measuring celestial body inclination. The mirror setup allows 90-degree elevation measurement within a 45-degree swing. Historically, this tool was used for ship navigation along with an accurate clock to determine location when no landmarks are visible.
