The Jupiter, officially named Central Pacific Railroad #60, was one of two historic steam locomotives that met at the Golden Spike ceremony marking the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. Built by Schenectady Locomotive Works, New York, in September 1868 along with three other engines - Storm, Whirlwind, and Leviathan, it was later dismantled, sailed to San Francisco, and reassembled at Central Pacific headquarters in Sacramento. The Jupiter, a wood-burning locomotive featuring a 'balloon stack' chimney with a spark arrestor, was scrapped in 1909; a replica was constructed 70 years later in 1979.
