The central sugar factory at Estate Lower Love's importance lay in its ability to empower small-scale cultivators to participate in the sugar industry.\n \n The chimney was erected in 1823, standing at an impressive 112 feet high, approximately 26 feet thick at its base, and tapering up to a width of about 14 feet near the top. Mr. William Peebles was the mastermind behind this architectural marvel. Unfortunately, little is known about his early life, but it is believed he may have been enslaved. However, further investigation is necessary to confirm this theory. In the 1841 Census, Mr. Peebles was listed as a 23-year-old free man residing in Christiansted. A skilled master Mason and later classified as an Architect, Mr. Peebles left his mark on the island by rebuilding the upper floor of government house between 1862-1866.
