Centaur Pressing a Wound

Centaur Pressing a Wound

Marble metope from the Parthenon's south side, specifically from the eastern half, sits in the British Museum as a testament to a brutal battle between Centaurs and Lapiths at Peirithoos' wedding feast. The young Lapith on the left grasps a Centaur's head firmly with his left hand, while readied to strike with his other arm. A wounded Centaur rears up, pressing its right hand against its own back wound in desperation. A fallen chlamys hangs loosely behind the Lapith's back, as if swept aside by his furious movements. The missing pieces include the Lapith's foreleg and right forearm, the Centaur's left arm, and right leg, while fragments of the top-left frame show signs of restoration.
