This piece is metope from the south side of the Pantheon. Metope is a rectangular architectural element often decorated with painted or sculptural art. This metope is one of the most famous examples, part of the 92 metopes of the Parthenon marbles that depict scenes like the battle between the Centaurs and the Lapiths. The story of the Lapiths' victory over the Centaurs is a classic Greek myth. According to this legend, King Pirithous of the Lapiths invited the Centaurs to his daughter's wedding, Hippodamia. During the feast, the Centaurs tried to kidnap Hippodamia and her friends, sparking an epic battle. The Lapiths ultimately won with divine help.
